Why open water swimming is booming in 2026
Open water swimming has surged into the mainstream - and the numbers back it up. The UK now has ten times more open water swimming events scheduled for 2026–2027 than just two years ago, and demand at venues like Upton Warren keeps growing.
So what's behind the boom? In a word: freedom. Recent research published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology found that wild swimming delivers significantly higher wellbeing benefits than indoor or open-air pool swimming, largely thanks to feelings of autonomy, competence, and headspace. It's the reset, the calm, the mental clarity - all in one bracing dip.
What to expect
Sessions run every Wednesday evening from 6pm to 7:30pm, throughout the season which runs until Wednesday 9 September 2026. Arrive any time during the session - just remember it wraps up promptly at 7:30pm.
You'll be swimming a refreshing 400-metre course around our stream-fed lake, in a clockwise direction, with RLSS-trained lifeguards on and off the water. Water quality is regularly tested, and toilets, changing rooms, and hot showers are all on-site for that all-important post-swim warm-up.
