Did you know that Aztec Adventure is an RYA Sailability Centre? We aim to make sailing accessible to everyone, regardless of their physical abilities. In this post, we will delve deep into the world of disability sailing, its benefits, and how you can get involved.
The Power of Partnership
The success of disability sailing is largely due to the partnerships between sailing clubs and organisations that promote inclusivity. One such partnership is between Upton Warren Sailing Club, Bromsgrove District Council and Aztec Adventure. We work together to provide sailing sessions for people with disabilities. The sessions are led by qualified RYA Instructors and volunteers who are dedicated to making sailing accessible for all. This partnership is a true testament to the power of collaboration and the impact it can have on people's lives.
Sailing for All
One of the most remarkable things about disability sailing is that it truly is for everyone. With no experience necessary and a range of equipment and boats available, including adaptions for different people, absolutely anyone can go sailing. This means that people with a wide range of disabilities, including physical, sensory, and intellectual, can experience the thrill of sailing and the freedom it brings.
The Sessions
The disability sailing sessions take place at Aztec Adventure Upton Warren. The next sessions are on Monday 10th June, Monday 8th July and Monday 12th August 2024. The sessions will run from 5:30pm-7:30pm, with 45-minute time slots available. The cost is only £4.50 per session, making it an affordable and accessible activity for all.
Boats Available
There are various boats available for disability sailing, each offering a unique experience. The Hansa dinghy, a single and two-seater dinghy, allows individuals to have complete control of their boat, learning how to steer, adjust the sails, and control the speed. The Wheely boat, a motorised boat, is specially designed for wheelchair users, allowing them to experience sailing from their own chair. And for those who prefer a more relaxed sailing experience, the larger Cruiser boats offer a chance to sail around the lake with a volunteer from Upton Warren Sailing Club.
